So on Wednesday I celebrated 2 weeks in Hawaii, and for every day that I have been here, I find it so hard to believe I am still in America.
First off, Hawaii has this great history that I never knew existed. What I think is odd is that Hawaii is part of the US, and I never learned about some of the important history relating to Hawaii. For example, Wednesday was King Kamehameha Day, which is a holiday here in Hawaii. King Kamehameha was the guy who unified the Hawaiian Islands; I think we should have learned that.
Also, before Hawaii was part of the US, one of the Kings was good friends with the emperor of Japan, and his niece almost married someone in the Japanese royal family. Then would Pearl Harbor have ever happened? How would the US been involved in WWII? Where would we stand today!? ...makes you think right.
Next, there is such a rich Hawaiian culture, which I find so different than the mainland. The Aloha spirit really exists. Maybe its just more played up in the area that I'm in because it's so touristy, but you really feel it. Everyone is so genuinely nice. I've only been at work for like ten days, but I already feel a part of their ohana.
I know I still have a lot of time here, but I'm going to be so sad when I have to leave. Hawaii just has such a different feel than the rest of America. I can't believe I'm still in the US.

So yesterday I had a day off, and I decided to go on a guided tour of the "natural highlights of Oahu" because I was bored and wanted to take pictures. So yesterday at work, I was learning about the server's position and duties. I had to follow around a waitress, and I assisted her with whatever she had to do. So today while I was relaxing on the beach like I do everyday before work, there was a Portuguese family sitting next to me with this screaming toddler. The toddler was screaming because he was cared of the water, but the dad wanted to go in. After arguing for about 5 minutes while the kid is still screaming, the family started to pack their things. First off, sorry for the lack of posts. I got a little distracted during finals time and all that comes with the end of the year. I've only explored Honolulu for a day, and I find it a lovely city, but kind of surreal. Maybe it's because I'm so used to the Northeast and NYC. I'm just so amazed to see high rises adjacent to palm trees, sand, and the ocean. The Waikiki area is much more bustling that I thought it would be; I feel some sort of uneasiness seeing the juxtaposition of relaxation and busyness. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. |
